It was a small group but an ambitious couple of riders who headed out the last weekend in May, 2009 for the OSC Spring Overnighter. As indicated in the ride description the destination was selected at the pre-ride meeting. At 9:30 AM it was kickstands up as 2 riders, both on Burgman 400 scooters headed for loop around Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.
Via the back roads through Beaverton, Forest Grove and Vernoia the scooters made their way the Westport Ferry, the last ferry operating on the Columbia River. On the way to the ferry there was some outstanding scenery. At one point there was a view of Mts. Rainer, St Helens, Adams and Hood. Only on a clear day can you see these four peaks at once.
Once across the river the group turned toward US 101 and scooted up the Washington coast to camp in a state park just south of Forks, Washington. First day’s total distance traveled was 348 Miles.
We broke camp at around 7:00 AM the second day and road northwest to Cape Flattery, the northwestern most point in the lower 48 states, before tuning east and following he Straight of Juan de Fuca, rejoining Hwy 101, following Hood Canal to the end of the Puget Sound and finally home to Portland. The ride disbanded after a 404 miles of riding on the second day, and a total of 752 miles.
Over all a great ride! For those of you who are not familiar with the OSC this was not a typical ride for us. Our rides are generally much shorter and are day trips.
