Erinie,

The rides you see posted on the OSC web are written specifically for the Garmin Zumo series GPS.  With a Garmin Zumo you will get the exact route.

We also upload a GPX Exchange file that is the open source version of the map.  GPS units that support custom routes may be able to create a route from the GPX Exchange file.  Routes created from the GPX Exchange format will not match the Zumo routes.

I have never tried a Tom- Tom, but I have worked with the Magellan system and Streets & Trips.  These Magellan and Streets & Trips systems reproduced the Zumo routes with 90 - 99% accuracy depending on the complexity of the route.  Neither system ever reproduced a Zumo route with 100% accuracy.   If your goal is to upload OSC routes the Zumo system is the best choice.  Any unit other than a Zumo is a compromise.  But hey, there is noting wring with a compromise; I have a Zumo 450 which is the first generation of the Zumo series and is the middle quality.  I will not be putting our the $250 to upgrade to the state of the art Zumo.

If you want a GPS just to get you from place to place, there are many choices.  The Zumo is not only the dominate GPS system for the OSC, but motorcycles in general.  The Zumo is more expensive, but there are specific features that you gain.  It is a price vs performance decision.

Again, let's talk Sunday.

Thanks Steve and Rick,

Hope to see you on Sunday, and we can talk.  I was all ready to cough up the dough to get the Zumo 220, until I talked to Frank.  Maybe he and I are just too cheap.  Do I understand correctly that the map download work ONLY on the Zumo?  That alone would make the decision for  me, since I think those ride posts are great.  Thanks.

Erine, There is more to consider than price.  It all depends on what you want from the GPS.  It is worth a little time to make an informed decision.

Hands down Zumo is the best, and there are multiple models and price options.

Let's talk if you are at the breakfast on Sunday, if not we can talk on the phone or meet up.

OK, I'm just throwing this out there for anyone to answer.  I was thinking about getting a GPS, but those Garmin Zumos are so expensive.  Frank was telling me his is just a regular car unit from Tom Tom, less than $100, and works fine for him.  What does another $300 for the Zumo get for me?  Just a waterproof case and blueray?  Or is there more to consider?

I just don't know much about them, so hopefully someone can enlighten me.  Thanks, and hope to see y'all Sunday, weather permitting.
